House Shopping, Day 1

Posted by Katie On January - 11 - 2009

Today Nik and I went house shopping!  We were both so excited and also a little nervous, I think.  We have a great Realtor who showed us 5 or 6 houses around Davis.  We fell in love with the first house we saw, which is a 5 bedroom home pretty close to where we live now.  We didn’t like any of the rest (except one that I thought was the cutest thing ever, but the “master bedroom” wouldn’t even fit our bed).  One house was SO bad, SO WEIRD…just the strangest thing that’s ever been built…it made the Realtor use antibacterial gel when we left.

We got our hopes set all high for this first house…just a gorgeous place.  Nik called George who said, “5 bedroom?” and we realized…we don’t need a 5 bedroom home for 2 people.  We were disappointed in our crash back down to reality, but it’s true.  It would be pretty foolish (although…imagine the possibilities–a scrapbook room, a bedroom, a room for JoJo, an office, and a guest bedroom…1, 2, 3, 4, 5!  That’s 5!).

We’re going to start looking in other areas, including Sacramento.  Hopefully we can see some of those next week.  Also, hopefully something else opens up in Davis, because we didn’t like what we were left with!  It was a fun day, ended with pigging out on pizza and bruscetta downtown.  Now we’re relaxing in our robes, getting set to find some more houses to tour…

Weird (But Not Complaining!)

It’s Tuesday, and I’ve made breakfast, and am now leisurely sipping my coffee and relaxing.  “Surely tomorrow must be a day from hell,” I thought…but no!  Tomorrow all I have to do is go to class from 2-4!  I am LOVING this new schedule, yet I can’t really figure out what’s so different.  I’m in class the same number of hours, and I’m working the same number of hours.  It’s just the scheduling of the days, seems immeaureably better.  And not only do I not have to walk to my car at 9pm across the unlit campus…there’s more free time, somehow.  Strange, but nice…

Work High

Posted by Katie On January - 5 - 2009

I was a tad depressed and nervous today for school and work to start up again–I told my officemate Carolyn that I felt like a 2nd grader on her first day of school.  I had a meeting scheduled with Sally today to discuss the work I did for our chapter over break, and to talk about how we’re going to use part of it in our next grant proposal.  She was THRILLED with the work I got done, saying over and over how much it was and how good it was!  I found out, also that she wrote me into the Autism Speaks grant she is applying for.  I, along with one of her postdocs, are going to be the main people on this…and I am so excited!  I hope we get the grant.  It’s a really exciting new project!

I headed over to class after my wonderful meeting with wonderful Sally.  Of course, I was two hours early, and got a parking spot right away.  It was great to see Kyle, David, Abby, and Natalie again.  The class seemed great and the professor is a young, smart- and laid-back-seeming type of guy.  It’s behavioral genetics.  I’m actually pretty excited to start some of this reading.

After class I chatted with my friends, and then we went home, not sure what to do because we’re used to getting out of class late at night!  It is now the most perfect type of drizzly, cup of tea day, and I’m sitting at my brand new laptop, sipping on Coffee Bean Winter Dream tea, watching Jo watch the dryer steam fog outside the window.

Bulleted Update–Fun, Fun, Fun!

Posted by Katie On December - 30 - 2008

Similar to my List of Happenings post, here is a bulleted list of happenings.  I don’t feel like I can put into words the great fun and relaxation I have had during this winter break home, so here are some thoughts and happenings.

  • Scrapbook catch-up!  Or, rather, scrapbook work-on, since I have completed a few pages, but made so many more memories since I’ve been here, that I’m sure I’ll go home needing to do more than I did.  But hopefully I’ll have completed all July, 2008 activities by the time I get back into school.
  • I finished sorting all of my literature for my chapter.  In other words, I finished reading through all early intervention literature EVER DONE on kids who are blind, deaf, mentally retarded, or premature, or have Down Syndrome or cerebral palsy.  That’s a lot of studies.  I had to find them, first of all, which I’ve been doing since September.  Then I had to read through them all, determine their quality, and rate them.  Now I get to write on the highly rated ones!
  • Gaby time.  Last night Gabs and I went to Cozymel’s for dinner and then to the movies.  We laughed so hard.  She’s the best.
  • Logan cuddles.  Logan spends most part of most nights with me, and leaves in the mornings (or middle of the night, I can never tell).  In what *I* consider morning, I call him in, and he jumps on my bed for cuddles.  He is so cute.  SO CUTE.
  • Again about Logan.  We played “Where’s the ball?” with him tonight, which is really hide-and-seek with a ball.  He’s great at this game and searches the house high and low for whatever particular toy we’re playing with–he always remembers.  He looks on every shelf, he checks the top of the table, he looks under and over furniture and between each pillow on the couch.  It’s great.  So today we hid it in his water bowl.  This was new, but he found it right away.  He just couldn’t bear to stick his nose deep enough to get it out.  He worked at picking it up by tennis ball fluff for a long while, while we sat and laughed until we couldn’t breathe, but that didn’t work.  Then, he drank all the water and got the ball!
  • Tonight we had a Thanksgiving dinner, mostly since Mandi wasn’t able to join us in Amesbury for Thanksgiving.  My mom did a spectacular job with the food, as I selfishly perused the scrapbook store and worked on a Mark and Noah page while she cooked.  Yummy!
  • Mandi, Danny, and I went ice skating, which was great fun.  We went to Seaside Lagoon.  Here we are:

  • My mom treated Nik, Mandi, Danny, and myself to an incredible dinner at Fogo de Chao, a Brazilian restaurant in Beverly Hills.  It was quite the experience…SO much food!  We chatted and chatted and couldn’t stop chatting (and eating).  Here WE are:

  • Tomorrow is sledding with Mandi and Justine.  It should be really fun.  I remember toppling over quite a bit last time Mandi and I went.  We’re sure to scream, and the most fun happens when it makes us scream (think dark San Francisco forest)!
  • There’s so much more…  It’s just been a great break so far, and it’s been nice to see everyone who I’ve missed so much, and I hope I can squeeze everything in in my last remaining days!

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig

Posted by Katie On December - 20 - 2008

I’m in LA!  Yay!  It was a difficult and slightly painful drive down.   I took the 80 to the 680 to the 101, because of the snow problem on the 5.  I had never driven the 101 all the way down, and I actually really enjoyed it.  It was really pretty, a very neat drive.  I thought it was funny that the scenery completely reminded me of Disney’s California Adventure, rather than the other way around.  With the trees hugging the highway, the tin agricultural buildings with “Asparagus” painted on the sides, the fields, the mountains covered in snow.  It was very pretty.  I was amazed at the great time I was making, and most of the time there was very few cars anywhere to be seen.  Then I hit Santa Barbara.  It took me two hours just to get through SB (rush hour), and from then on it was tough.  The valley and the 405 were horrible.  Even the radio DJ was late to his shift because of the 101/405 area traffic.

Anyway, I made it!  My mom had a yummy Greek dinner waiting for me.  Logan cried like a big baby and has been following me around and cuddling any chance he gets.  I went to bed pretty early to prepare myself for yesterday, which was our Christmas!  Mandi and I started the day with some shopping, and I wrapped and wrapped, and cooked (well, I mashed some sweet potatoes) all day until Christmas time!  Then gifts, fun, food, and a nice drive along the beach with Logan.

It’s nice to be home, and nice to know it’s for 2/3 weeks and not for 2/3 days!  I can’t wait to see everybody.  Let’s get together!!!

Whine, Whine, Whine

Posted by Katie On December - 12 - 2008

I’m a big huge baby when I’m sick.  Since Nik’s at work…there’s nobody else to whine to!  You know what’s equal parts pathetic and cute?  Poor little JoJo is sick too.  We’ve cuddled all morning, and she won’t eat, and she looks so sad!  At least we’re in it together.  Can dogs catch people sicknesses?

Ouch

Posted by Katie On December - 12 - 2008

The household has taken turns being sick.  Despite my very best, very thorough, efforts, I must have caught it from Nik.  Or maybe from work, since people there are sick now, too.  Anyway, I’ve been working from home–still getting a lot done, but in huge pain.  I haven’t been able to enjoy my Christmas break, really, since I fall into a heap of pain after working all day.

On a happier note, Nik ordered me a very, very exciting Christmas present.  Here’s my new friend: laptop.jpg

I am heading home next Thursday after a meeting with Sally.  I’ll get in pretty late since I’m driving.  I am so excited!!  I can’t wait to see everybody and do Christmasy things!

Back to resting…

Brrr

I have completely underestimated the coldness up here!  And I have since learned…IT’S COLD…but I continue to underestimate it every day!  Brrr!

I <3 Winter Break

Posted by Katie On December - 6 - 2008

Today is my first official day of winter break!  Ok…maybe yesterday was my first OFFICIAL day, but I worked all day…so today is really it!

We sure celebrated on Thursday after our last day of classes.  Here we are at Bistro 33.

quarterend-028.jpg

We had a pretty good, but uneventful, last two classes (April and I gave a great puberty-related presentation, and David was a champion wrapping up Piaget in an exact hour)…and then headed out to Bistro 33.  We had some mojito pitchers and sweet potato fries, and had an exciting White Elephant gift exchange.  It went so fast and we were all so polite about (not) stealing gifts that we invented a new, Forced-Trade Gift Game after we were done, to up the competition and laughter.  It was a great time, and we moved inside (thank you, my Southern California, flip-flopped in 39 degrees toes said) for shots…yes, shots…  It was tough to get up for work yesterday, but it was completely worth it.

I made it through yesterday without a zombie-day, which I’ve had 2 or 3 times since starting school, and even just 1 caffeine.  Sally and I worked for a solid few hours on our chapter, which was great.  After work, I lounged around, watched a movie and lots of TV–totally lazy.

I slept in very, very late today.  So did Nik and JoJo.  None of us had any idea it had already hit the PM.  Nik and I did some Christmas shopping, went out to lunch, and grocery shopping.  It’s so nice not to have to read all weekend, not having enough time to lift my head for a drink of water.  I do have some work on my chapter to do this weekend, or Monday, but I enjoy it and am super-excited about it, so it doesn’t count.

Anyway, yay to winter break!  I’m relaxed already.

List of Happenings

Posted by Katie On December - 4 - 2008

I tend to refrain from updating until I have huge stretches of time in which to do a post justice…and that doesn’t happen.  So here is a list of recent happenings.  Time may soon permit me to expand on some of these…

1.  Nik and I had a wonderful, relaxing, food-consuming, amazing, beautiful, great-company time in Amesbury.  Nik is working on a post about it, but Happening #3 got in the way.

2.  It took us 3 days to fly home.  Our plane almost crashed.  It was traumatizing.  We also had broken planes, delayed flights, cancelled flights, bad weather, poorly rated pilots, etc.  We were stranded, after our trauma which made me sick to my stomach (fear, not bounciness), in Phoenix for a night, then we were stranded in Las Vegas for a night.  We thought we deserved a treat, so we stayed in a penthouse suite on the strip.  The shower, to say the least, was incredible.

3.  Nik is sick.  He’s been in bed for 2 days.  He gets to win the “No JoJo on the bed game” (or rather, “Yes JoJo on the bed game”), so they are both quite pleased.  She’s exhausted from Happening #4, so it’s suiting her well.

4.  JoJo had a great time at Wag Hotel.  She has a reputation there, and when we called during the trip, they said, “Oh, JOJO…” and when we picked her up, the workers all emerged from their offices to talk about her.  She’s in the “High Energy Group.”

5.  I am off to my last day of class for the quarter!  After class, my friends and I are going out to have a gift exchange and celebrate our survival!  YAY!
